Three eras—the ancient, the mediaeval, and the modern—can be distinguished in Madhya Pradesh's history.

The Nanda Empire, the Maurya Empire, and the Gupta Empire all controlled the area throughout the ancient era. The growth of Rajput clans throughout the Middle Ages included the Paramara and Chandela clans, the latter of which is credited with building the Khajuraho temples. During this time, the Malwa Sultanate also held power.

The Mughal and Maratha empires, followed by the British Empire, rose to power in Madhya Pradesh throughout the modern era. Modern Madhya Pradesh included the British princely realms of Gwalior, Indore, and Bhopal. India did not regain independence from the British until the middle of the 20th century.
